Will insurance cover a weight-loss pill?

Short answer: It depends on your specific plan. Coverage for weight-loss drugs varies from plan to plan; plans that cover them often require prior authorization, and some don't cover them at all. If you're covered, manufacturer savings cards can bring the cost down to about $25 a month. If you're not, cash prices start at $149 a month for both pills, and Medicare enrollees may qualify for the $50 GLP-1 Bridge.

Step 1: find out what your plan says

Call the member-services number on your insurance card (or check your plan's online formulary) and ask three questions:

  1. Is the Wegovy pill or Foundayo on my formulary for weight management?
  2. Does it need prior authorization, and what are the criteria (usually BMI and related health conditions)?
  3. What would my copay or coinsurance be?

Prior authorization means your prescriber sends the insurer documentation that you meet its criteria before the plan pays.

Example: CVS Caremark

CVS Caremark, one of the largest pharmacy benefit managers, announced that both the Wegovy injection and pill would keep preferred status across its formularies, that it would remove its new-to-market block on Foundayo effective June 1, 2026, and that it would add Zepbound back to its commercial formularies effective Oct 1, 2026. A drug being on a formulary doesn't guarantee your particular plan covers it for weight loss, so confirm with your plan directly.

Step 2: use the manufacturer savings card

On Medicare?

Federal law has long barred Part D from covering drugs only for weight loss, but the temporary Medicare GLP-1 Bridge now covers the Wegovy pill and Foundayo at $50 a month for eligible enrollees.

If you're denied

  • Ask your prescriber about an appeal or formulary exception; the denial letter explains how.
  • Ask whether the plan covers a different GLP-1 instead.
  • Compare the self-pay route: both pills start at $149/month cash. Estimate your total.

FAQ

Does insurance cover the Wegovy pill?

It depends on your plan. Plans that cover GLP-1s for weight loss often require prior authorization, and some don't cover weight-loss drugs at all. With coverage, Novo Nordisk's savings offer can bring the cost to about $25 a month.

What if my insurance won't cover a weight-loss pill?

You can appeal, ask about a covered alternative, or pay cash: both the Wegovy pill and Foundayo start at $149 a month through the manufacturers' self-pay programs.

Can I use a savings card with Medicare?

No. Manufacturer savings cards can't be used with Medicare or Medicaid. Eligible Medicare Part D enrollees may instead qualify for the $50 Medicare GLP-1 Bridge.
